Many proteins function in the crystalline state, making crystallography a tool that, beside structure, can address mechanism. By initiating biological turnover in the crystal, transient structural species form, which may be filmed ‘on the fly’ by Laue diffraction or captured by trapping methods. These strategies are jointly referred to as ‘kinetic crystallography’. In this article, we review the general concepts of kinetic crystallography.

Découverte d’un nouveau comportement de l’eau dans les cellules d’organismes vivant dans la Mer Morte.

Ces cellules amatrices de sel, appelées halophiles, font partie de la classe des extrêmophiles. Leur étude permet d’apprendre beaucoup sur les capacités de certains êtres vivants à s’adapter à des conditions extrêmes sur terre et pourraient également nous aider à rechercher des traces de vie extra-terrestre.

La présente étude, qui fait l’objet d’une collaboration entre l’IBS, l’ ILL, et des laboratoires allemand et israélien, va permettre d’améliorer notre compréhension des interactions entre les systèmes biologiques et l’eau.

L’eau, à l’état liquide, est une structure hautement dynamique, mais elle est légèrement plus lente dans les cellules vivantes. Or, celle découverte dans les cellules d’organismes anciens vivant dans les eaux saturées en sel de la Mer Morte est mille fois plus lente, ce qui indique des interactions particulièrement fortes qui pourraient être semblables à celles rencontrées dans certaines protéines des cellules humaines.

Cette découverte a donné publiée le 10 janvier 2007, dans les Comptes Rendus de l’Académie Nationale des Sciences des Etats-Unis (PNAS). L’article a été retenu pour faire la couverture de ce prestigieux journal scientifique, illustré par une reproduction par une mosaïque d’église jordanienne du VIème siècle représentant la région de la Mer Morte.
