The automatic screening of crystallization solutions can allow to obtain quickly information on the crystallization conditions of a protein. Screening of predefined conditions can sometimes be enough to find the buffer, salt and precipitating agent conditions necessary to obtain a crystal, but in most cases, we must refine one or more crystallization conditions, with promising results. This optimization phase may be lengthy and complex because it is often necessary to refine different conditions for a single protein.
To simplify the optimization of crystallization conditions, the IBS Protein crystallization platform and the GIPSE team developed in collaboration with the EMBL crystallization platform, the OptiLink software: this software can generate Gemini scripts (version 4.2 or more) to control a Tecan® robot for filling crystallization plates defined through the software OptiCrys. This software allows to avoid the manual programming of the robot by the experimenter.
