Work at IBS

The Institut de Biologie Structurale (IBS) is situated on EPN science campus in the city of Grenoble, at the heart of the French Alps. Next door are its European partner institutes : the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and two large-scale research facilities, the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) and the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL). The IBS thus offers a very attractive environment for doing basic biological research on problems related to human health and biotechnology.

The IBS is a mixed research unit (UMR) jointly operated by two French national research agencies (the CEA and the CNRS) and the University Grenoble Alpes (UGA). Most staff members belong to one of these three organizations, but alternative sources of support are possible.

In all, 270 people work at the institute, representing over thirty different nationalities. The staff includes eighty researchers, fifty engineers, forty technicians and administrative personnel. In addition there are some forty PhD students, thirty post-docs, and several master’s and undergraduate students.

Everyone is working towards the same goal : to achieve excellent scientific results and develop innovative new methods in integrated structural biology in a multidisciplinary, collaborative and welcoming environment.
