Science Festival 2020In a turbulent context due to the health crisis, the IBS was able to maintain two events : Discover the awesome world of biolog, workshops for primary schools
Discover Research careers, conderence-debat for secondary schools
Details about different careers and required studies generated a great interest and a real questioning about orientation. We hope that these presentations, which the students found enriching and motivating, will help them to better project themselves in a path that motivates them. Congratulations to dozen volunteers for their perseverance and the adaptability they shown to ensure the continuity of our mission to popularize science. |

Science Festival 2018On October 08 and 09, two elementary school classes from Grenoble and one from Seyssins took part in 2-hour workshops prepared by IBS scientists. After a short introduction about the living world, the classes were divided into 3 groups, each participating in one of the following workshops : fluorescent proteins, banana DNA and protein discoveries. A dozen IBS scientists led this operation for 2 days, to the delight of eighty enthusiastic kids.
Four secondary school classes from Isle d’Abeau, Villard Bonnot, Grenoble and Briançon were registered for this operation which took place on October 11 & 12 at the IBS. They discovered the principle of NMR, X-ray crystallography and electron microscopy to study proteins and learned to cultivate bacteriophages during hands-on sessions. The hundred students and their dozen teachers would have liked to spend the day experimenting and visiting all our facilities !
For the fourth year, the EPN campus institutes participated in the "Parvis des Sciences", the science village organized by Giant which offers stands, laboratory visits and conferences.
Many thanks to our 30 volonteers for having contributed to the diffusion of scientific culture in a fun and accessible way and perhaps foster scientific vocations ! |
French Science Festival 2017For the 2017 edition, IBS organised 3 operations, from 09 to 21 October 2017, in three different locations. As every year, the IBS was keen to offer activities to CM2 classes. As children’s access to the EPN campus is not possible, our activities were moved to the Jean Roget building in La Tronche. Four schools from Crolles, Poisat, Champ sur Drac and Saint Egrève took part in 2-hour workshops on 09 and 10 October 2017. On the menu : discovery of proteins and DNA. A dozen volunteers animated these workshops to the delight of a hundred pupils. Teachers underlined the interest of a real scientific approach and appreciated the quality of the whole organization.
Members of the IBS also presented the advances in structural biology research and helped students discover methods & facilities that allow researchers access to the infinitely small. On October 12th and 13th, four classes could attend workshops on X-ray crystallography, NMR and biochemistry and were able to exchange with our technicians, engineers, researchers and students on research professions. Teachers found the visit very formative and the 123 secondary schools pupils were curious and delighted with their visit organized by about twenty volunteers. In close connection with its partners of the EPN scientific campus, IBS was also present at the ‘Parvis des Sciences’ for the 3rd year. The EPN stand made "all the light on matter". In addition to the presentation of European facilities (ILL and ESRF), electron microscopy was the focus of attention. Visitors were also able to discover protein crystals and play with DNA. Two scientists from the IBS proposed an animation on "Extreme Life" : visitors got explanations on archea proteins and could measure respiration using fluorescent proteins. About thirty volunteers (including 3 IBS and staff from EMBL, ESRF, ILL) took turns on the EPN stand to welcome the general public. Despite the beginning of school holidays, the ‘Parvis des Science” attracted more than 1800 people on Saturday, October 21, 2017. |
French Science Festival 2016For the 25th Fête de la science, IBS organised 3 operations, from 8 to 14 October 2016, in three different locations : On Saturday 8 October, the four EPN campus institutes held a stand at the French Science Festival "Fête de la Science". The public discovered the different activities and research carried out on the EPN Science Campus, guided by more than 25 passionate volunteers from the 4 institutes. Half of the stand was highlighting to the large-scale facilities (ILL / ESRF), and their wide range of scientific activities. The other half was dedicated to structural biology, with many hands-on activities coming from EMBL Heidelberg and IBS (crystals and 3D structure visualization, archeas). No doubt, a great success, organised by the communication units of the four institutes.
On October 10 and 11, a dozen IBS and INAC staff organized science experiments involving proteins and DNA for a hundred pupils to develop children’s curiosity for science. After these short experiments children could meet some university students. The 4 enlisted classes did appreciate the quality of the reception in small groups by enthusiastic volonteers and the children enjoyed to be able to handle material.
On October 13 & 14 at IBS, 115 secondary schools pupils and their 12 teachers explored the secret Life of Proteins through different activites (NMR, crystallography or biochemistry). They discovered the experimental approaches in life science and scientific results obtained at the IBS as well as different careers in research and the studies to become scientist. They learned how a laboratory is organized, and found it fun to work in an international friendly research institute. Teachers as students would have liked participate in all workshops !
Many thanks to our visitors, and to all the volunteers who made this interactive event possible ! |
2015 Science Fair editionIn 2015, the national science festival, Fête de la Science, partnered with the International Year of Light. On this occasion, the IBS organized 4 events : On October 05 & 06 at IBS, 66 secondary schools pupils and their 6 teachers explored the world of proteins at atomic scale. They discovered the experimental approaches in life science and scientific results obtained at the IBS as well as different careers in research :
On October 08 & 09, with the help of IBS scientists,108 schoolchildren discovered the awesome world of biology :
On October 10, PhD students set up an exhibtiion stand at the Mini Maker Fair ’Parvis des Sciences’ along with neighbouring institutes ILL, EMBL and ESRF. It demonstrates the complementarity of these institutes and the importance of geographical proximity
The exhibition "La vie en lumière, lumière sur la vie" at Saint Martin d’Uriage (coordinated by Beate Bersch researcher at IBS) invites visitors to explore bioluminescent organisms and molecules.During the science festival, Beate welcomed 133 schoolpupils and 180 general public. The exhibition is open from september 25 to november 29 :
About thirty five volunteers were mobilized for those events, thanks to make them a success ! . |
Science Fair 2014Now settled into a new building, IBS scientists resumed their participation in the Science Fair, which took place from 26 September to 19 October 2014. On this occasion guided tours for general public and workshops for CM2 classes were proposed. On October 02 and 03, a hundred pupils were invited to participate in one of three workshops (short experiments involving proteins and DNA) dedicated for primary schools.
On October 18, two visits were organized on EPN Campus. A guided tour entitled "At the heart of the living molecules" was organized in the IBS building by scientists from IBS, EMBL, UVHCI and ESRF They animated three workshops about NMR, microbiology and crystallography. Inside a marquee at the entry of the campus, crystallography activities were also put on for people of all ages. Visitors were also welcomed elsewhere on the EPN campus, at the ESRF and the ILL.
In total about 40 volonteers were involved on both events to share the great pleasure of discovery with 250 people. |

20th Anniversary of Science FestivalFor the 20th anniversary of the French Science week, the IBS invited high school students and primary school pupils to discover the daily life of researchers, the different jobs offered in a research institute and the interest of a thorough knowledge of proteins. A general presentation and three workshops (RMN, Cristallography and Biochemistry) were proposed to125 high school students.
To develop children’s curiosity for science the IBS staff organized science experiments for a hundred pupils involving proteins and DNA. After these short experiments children were invited to visit a laboratory.
More than thirty volunteers were mobilized for this event, now eight years old at the IBS. |
